Some things on a plant get insulated once and left alone for years. Others get opened up constantly: valves that get serviced, flanges that get broken, turbines and exchangers that come apart for maintenance. Hard insulation on those is a losing game, because every time maintenance touches the component, someone cuts the insulation off and rebuilds it. Removable blankets exist for exactly that. We fabricate them in-house, so here is how they are actually made.
A removable blanket is a soft insulation cover built to fit one specific component. Insulation fill inside, a durable facing cloth outside, held together and to the equipment so it can come off and go back on. Maintenance unstraps it, does the work, and puts it back, with no cutting and no rebuild. The same blanket goes back on the same valve for years.
Two situations make a blanket the right call. First, serviceability: any component opened, inspected, or maintained on a schedule wants a blanket so the insulation is not destroyed every time. Valves, flanges, pump bodies, turbine casings, exchanger heads, strainers, and traps are the usual list. Second, shape: some components are so irregular that insulating them conventionally is slow and messy. A blanket is fabricated to that shape once, in the shop, and then it just fits.
A blanket is not one product, it is a system matched to the service. Three parts define it.
The fill is the insulation inside, chosen for the operating temperature, from moderate service up into high heat. The facing cloth is the outer skin, chosen for the temperature and for what it has to survive, whether that is weather, abrasion, or chemical exposure. And the closure is how the whole thing is held together and shut, which is where sewn versus hog ring comes in.
Sewn blankets use high-temperature thread to stitch the seams and the internal channels that keep the fill evenly distributed. The result is a clean, tight, finished blanket that holds its shape well and looks the part. Sewing is favored where fit and finish matter, where the blanket stays put for long stretches, and on shapes that benefit from stitched channels holding the fill in place. The thread has to take the same heat as the rest of the assembly, because the seams are only as good as the thread holding them.
Hog-ring blankets are closed with metal rings crimped through the facing along the seams. It is rugged, fast to fabricate, and it stands up to frequent removal, because there is no thread to wear or burn through at the seam. Hog ring is favored on high-temperature and high-abuse components, and on anything that comes on and off often, where a stitched seam would see more wear. The trade-off is a slightly less finished look than a sewn blanket, which rarely matters on a hot valve at a plant.
Frequent removal and high heat lean toward hog ring for durability. Fit, finish, and stable installs lean toward sewn. Plenty of blankets combine approaches, and the right build depends on the component, the service, and how often it comes off.
