Most of the big data center campuses going up around West Texas and El Paso are building their own power, gas turbines in a lot of cases, sited right next to the compute they feed. That is a second wave of work for the insulation trade on top of the buildings themselves, because a power plant is a heavy insulation job. Hot piping everywhere, turbines that run hot and get serviced, exhaust and steam systems, and a long list of balance-of-plant equipment. Here is what goes where.
A gas power plant moves a lot of heat on purpose, and nearly all of it needs managing. Insulation on a plant does several jobs at once: it conserves heat and keeps processes stable, it protects people from burn surfaces, and it cuts noise on the equipment that needs it. Between the turbines, the hot piping, the steam and exhaust, and the heat-recovery equipment, the material list is long and it runs hot. This is cal-sil and rock wool territory, not moderate-temperature fiber.
Turbines run hot and get opened up for inspection and maintenance. That combination makes them the classic removable-blanket application. The turbine casing, and often the valves and hot components around it, get custom removable blankets built for the service temperature. When maintenance needs in, the blankets come off and go back on, instead of insulation getting cut off and rebuilt every outage. On a plant, turbine and valve blankets are a large part of the package and a big part of the labor savings over the plant's life.
The straight hot runs, steam lines, and process piping take conventional high-temperature pipe covering, cal-sil where it needs strength, rock wool where it does not, jacketed in aluminum or stainless. Larger vessels and irregular equipment take rock wool blanket and board. Exhaust systems and heat-recovery equipment each carry insulation matched to their temperature, which on the exhaust side can be very high.
A lot of this equipment sits outdoors in the West Texas weather, so the jacket system matters as much here as on any oilfield job. Metal jacketing with a moisture barrier over the hot runs, careful detailing at terminations, and the banding and fitting covers to finish it. Corrosion under insulation is as much a concern on a power plant as anywhere, and the outdoor equipment is where it starts.
Texas has a long list of gas power projects going right now, under construction, in preconstruction, and announced, and a large share are tied to data center demand in the Permian and around El Paso. For a contractor or supplier, each plant is a sizable package combining hot pipe covering, custom turbine and valve blankets, high-temperature board and blanket, and a full jacket system. It is a different material mix than a straight midstream job, weighted toward high-temperature materials and fabricated blankets.
